What is CMD (Command Prompt) ?



CMD/Command prompt is a command line interpreter application available in your Systems Operating System. It is used to execute the entered commands. Command Prompt is officially know as “ Windows Command Processor“, other terms used for it are CMD Prompt and Command Shell, Even the term cmd.exe is extensively used.

Commands and their functionalities

Here are a few commands along with their functionalities that they perform when they are executed. These commands may depend on the version of the Windows you are using.


window Commmands:
(using command prompt)

1: ansi.sys  : Defines a function that changes the reassign keys, display graphs and control the cursor movement.

2: append  : DOS looks in other directories when running a command or when editing a file.

3: assign    : Alternate letters are assigned to a drive letter.

4: break     : Enable/disable “ctrl+C” feature.

5: cd           : Change directory.

6: chdir      : Change directories.

7: chkdsk   : Check your hard-drive running ‘FAT’ for errors.

8: cls           : Clear the screen.

9: color       : Change the background color of the command prompt.

10: comp    : Compare files.

11: data       : Change/view the system date.

12: del         : Delete one or more files.

13: dir         : List the content of the current directory.

14: doskey  : View/run commands that have been run in the past.

15: echo      : Displays messages / enable or disable echo.

16: erase     : Erase the files from the system.

17: exit        : Exits from the command interpreter.

18: fc           : Compare file.

19: find       : Search text/word within the file.

20: findstr : Search for a string(group of words) within the file.

21: ftp         : Connects and operates on an ‘FTP’ server.

22: keyb     : Changes the layout of the keyboard.

23: lock      : Locks the hard-drive.

24: logoff   : Logoff the currently profile used by the system.

25: md       : Make new directory.

26: mklink : Creates a symbolic link.

27: more     : Dispalys one page at-a-time.

28: net fix, view, update the network and its setting.

29: path          : Modify/view the systems path location.

30: ping          : Test and send the information to another network device.

31: print          : Prints data(to a printer port if any).

32: rd               : Remove directory.

33: shutdown : Shutdowns the system from the command prompt.

34: time           : View/change the time of the system.

35: undelete   : Recycle/recover a deleted file.
